We are delighted to announce that we have secured the services of talented all-rounder Francoise Stoman for the 2019 season. Stoman hails from South Africa and, in signing for Stretford follows in the footsteps of Roelof van der Merwe, Gareth Steenkamp and Erin Ewerts.
He has kindly taken time out from his matriculation celebrations, exam finals and busy cricket schedule to introduce himself to Stretford. We know you will make him feel very welcome as he seeks to develop his game and assist the club with its target of promotion!
SCC: Hi there, thanks for taking some time out to speak to us. Please could you inform our members where you are from and what club you play at. How long you been playing?
FS: I’m Françoise Stoman from Kempton Park in Johannesburg. I have been playing cricket from the age of 6 and playing for Avion Cricket ClFub for 13 seasons and play for Kempton Park High school 1st team and also the captain
SCC: Wow that’s along time to play at one club. Are you quite proud of the club? Does your family have involvement?
FS: Yes it is a long time especially since I’m only 18 years old. Yes the club has a proud history and i’m proud of what it has already accomplished from being on the brink insolvency to winning titles. We are working towards a goal to bring the club back to the top.
SCC: Your family as well?
FS: I have an older brother who was also involved with the club but he moved clubs 2 seasons ago to play at a rival Kempton club. My dad had lots of involvement with the club. He coached my brother up to U14 and was always there for us. In recent years he finished coaching and became more of a supporter. We just need more people to help improve and better the club
SCC: That sounds like a similar story to what we are doing. We need more helpers also. SCC is over 160 years old and we all like to get stuck in and do hard work.
SCC: So what inspires you to continue to improve?
FS: Mostly the drive to accomplish my dreams and to prove people wrong. I love doing the unthinkable and playing cricket gives me the opportunity to do that. I can express myself on and of the field.
SCC: That’s a great attitude and sounds good for someone coming overseas to play. So what sort of player then is coming to Stretford?
FS: I would say I always aim to be a positive player. I think batting and bowling is only about output and that is my focus. I love the longer format because it gives me time to settle at the crease and build.
SCC: Never say die?
FS: Yes I always encourage myself to go until I can’t go further. I don’t like losing but it gives you a better learning experience when you lose that you can use to improve.
SCC: So your a genuine all rounder? Any personal career highlights and team highlights?
FS: A batting all rounder. I played cricket for 12 years and won trophies with teams and individually but it really bugged me that I had not scored a ton. That was tough for me because each year I have set goals for myself and for the most part I achieved them. Finally this season I scored a new school record 213 from 144 balls.
SCC: So you still haven’t scored a ton?!
FS: Hahaha !!
SCC: the team?
FS: Team highlight was winning our tour this year in my final year playing school cricket. The season prior to that was poor so it was nice to finally bag the trophy with a great bunch of lads.
SCC: That’s a fairy tale ending yeah to end your nightmare of not scoring a ton! Some people never get one!! Is this just the beginning for you? What are you hoping to achieve by playing in the UK?
FS: I just cant describe the feeling. Its something I will hold on to until the day I leave the earth. Now I have that milestone I know that I can do it. Having my father present when I scored 200 was special. He has helped me every step of the way for 12 years of playing cricket. Also my coach Johan Fourie who has pushed me this year. He has given me so much in such a short time and to score runs was my way of thanking him for all the advice and input he has given me.
SCC: You are obviously excited about coming to Stretford and the UK? Have you been over before? What are you plans whilst here?
FS: I’m really excited it’s going to be huge for me. I would like to help Stretford gain promotion to a higher league and continue to do what I love. I do have some other hobbies and I’m very exited at the prospect of seeing some live football, especially Chelsea !!!
I’ve never been to UK but have been to other European countries and also Asian countries. I will definitely do some sight seeing and maybe visit the Bridge and hopefully go to watch a cricket game between England and Australia in the Ashes.
SCC: Would you have celebrated Barkley’s 97th minute equaliser right in José’s face?
FS: Is that one of those trick questions?!??!! Most definitely! A Chelsea legend buzzing off to a rival – that’s what you get! 😂 Only joking. It was harsh from the Chelsea staff member but I wont lie, I was over the moon when he scored 😂
SCC: There are a few United fans at Stretford who are not used to things going against them. Mainly the younger lads. It gets quite heated in the bar!
FS: Yes well my brother supports united and it can also get heated at home between the 2 of us 😋
SCC: Haha. I’m sure we can sort out a few football matches. On an unrelated note, what are the three things you would take to a desert island?
FS: Wine gums, Chocolate milk, Women😂😂
SCC: I will stock pile wine gums and chocolate milk for you if you score a 50 every week
SCC: Do you have an elephant in your back garden?
FS: No unfortunately not 😂😂 but we do have ducks 😂😂
SCC: And a lion?
FS: Also not only 3 brave dogs😂😂
SCC: Are the ducks in the score book last weekend?
FS: 😂😂No we really have 2 ducks and the third is in the book yes 😂😂
SCC: Is there anyone you model your own game on? AB? Or are you much more of a Dean Elgar?
FS: I actually really like the England players. Woakes he is someone I admire. He always enjoys his cricket and loves playing the game. He always puts the team first and that’s what I like mostly. He never quits and always tries his best for his country
SCC: Interesting. Woakes seems to be the ultimate pro and such a nice bloke. If you do half as well as him you will be doing well for yourself and we hope that your stay with us helps you fulfil your dreams. You will have a blast.
FS: Thanks, I can’t wait. It’s nice to know that i’m going to be able to play for a hard working club with fun people with good hearts and great humour. I’m so excited and really looking forward to the UK summer.
