Help Needed – Land Contamination, Ecology, Biodiversity Assessments for our Club House Rebuild Project

I’m leading on a project to rebuild the club house at Stretford and we are at the stage of applying for planning permission. However, pre-planning advice from the council says we need to conduct a land contamination assessment, ecology assessment & bio-diversity assessment to submit with our application. If anyone knows any consultantants or companies that might be able to help with some social value related activity or volunteering/pro-bono please contact me. The club is located on an old landfill site and is part of the green belt therefore the cost just to get to planning is considerable. And I mean considerable. Especially for an open access community cricket club that is already paying £6000 per year for electric (and thats with solar panels covering a third of our use)

Saynor, Signings and Shifting the Culture

With 2024 approaching the club has been busy in the close season. Here is the latest cricket news coming out of the cricket section..

Ryan Williams leads the senior cricket section as Director of Cricket and will hopefully pull on his new kit, suppliled by Macron, more often next season. Williams wasted no time installing Yorkshireman, Adam Saynor as 1stXI Captain who hopes to improve the club’s fortunes in 2024.

“The primary goal is a swift return to the Championshp and to do that we needed to reset, retain players, attract new ones and continue to bring through our juniors. That’s the long term goal. We want to play the best cricket possible in a sustainable way” said Saynor.

“I know the areas we need to improve and there are certain areas to target however what we really need is to focus on is raising our own standards, that’s why why we are still looking out for a Head Coach who can help players to improve their performance”

“Stretford has always been a community club and that’s something we need to build on and get running through all our teams again. We’ll all be training together, getting to know each other, supporting each other and i’ll be trying to lead on creating a winning inclusive culture”

There are a couple of additions to the squad already for next season. Wil Foley, a first-grade Australian keeper batsman and fast-bowling allrounder, Omed Basir, who has moved up from Hemel Hampstead. Homegrown all rounder Tom Coulson has also committed his future to the club whose wickets and runs will be invaluable next year.

Ben Riddell will try to build on a mid table finish for the 2nd XI last year and again skippers the twos. Over the winter, Pavail Aqueel has undertaken an ECB L2 coaching course and is aiming to put that to good use in leading the 3rdXI in the GMCL Regional League – that means more games for the third team next seaosn and entry into the cup. We’ve also entered the 4th XI Development League which will be an excellent pathway for juniors into longer format open age cricket, this team will have a 10 game fixture list with additional friendlies and will be led by Danny Rowen. If members do want to undertake coaching courses the club will pay for these but you need to contact Ryan before enrolling but nevertheless this is smashing news that Pav is seeking to furtehr his own development and help others by undertaking his L2.

Ruth Cotton has stepped down as Junior Manager and the club would like to thank her for all her hard work, dedication and time that she put into the role. Details about winter nets will be announced soon.

SCC Powered by the Sun

We are delighted to announce that the club has secured £10,000 funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to install a solar array at the club.

The club has chosen Solar Xpress – Solar Xpress to supply and fit it’s system, they come highly reccomended and have given the club an exceptional price and have been ultra kind while our funding bid went through the process. Any members who are interested in exploring a solar install for themselves contact Tom directly on email addess T.Smith@solarxpress.co.uk

In December, the clubs fixed tariff electricity contract ended. Renewal quotes were quadruple the old rate. Had we not secured this funding from the National Lottery Community it is not an exaggeration to say that the club’s future would be insecure. There is no way the could absorb £12,000 per year in electric without raising prices substantially. The award of this funding and the installation ensures we can keep membership and prices as low as possible for everyone in the community.

We hope you will join us at the club this summer to celebrate our continued development on and off the pitch

Mavis Hutton RIP

With sadness, I report the death of Mavis Hutton who died peacefully on Saturday surrounded by her family. Mavis was aged 90 and was a long time supporter of the club.

Mavis’s first husband was Norman Pomfret, with whom she had two children, Mark and Jan. Following the death of Norman, she remarried the late Pete Hutton; a life-member and first team batter. Mavis and Pete were both very influential figures in the history of SCC. They ran an electrical business and undertook a massive amount of electrical work when the club was rebuilt in 1985.

The club would not be where it is today if it was not for members like Pete and Mavis and we should always remember their contribution.

Condolences to all Mavis’s friends and family. We will announce funeral details when known.

Autumn Newsletter

First of all, thanks for navigating to this newsletter! You’ve either followed a QR code off a leaflet at bonfire night (we hope you are having a good time!) or have simply surfed here along the waves of the information superhighway (yikes, not heard the internet called that since the early 00s)

As all the leaves turn brown and the sky turns grey, it appears to be a long walk to next cricket season however, the club is working hard to make progress.

South African Luke Smith Joins as Overseas Player for 2023
We are delighted to welcome Luke Smith as our overseas player for the 2023 season. The 24 year old, from Kimberley, South Africa, is a left handed top order batsmen and top quality wicket keeper. Luke has enjoyed sucessful seasons at Prestwick CC and Helensburgh CC in Scotland and, last season, at Ainsdale in the Liverpool Comp.

Luke has been schooled in the Northern Cape High Performance Academy and has spent time as a player coach in New Zealand for Takapuna CC in Auckland and is spending the winter playing in Melbourne Australia.

The well travelled yougster is hungry for runs and is keen to immerse himself in the club and offer support to our own youngsters within the junior section.

Membership Price Drop
We are looking for new members!!!! – that’s players both junior and senior of any ability to boost our ranks and social members. If you are new to the area, get on board and make new friends, if you are not getting a fair crack of the whip at your current club, come along! We have loads of opportunity. Our 1stXI finished a respectable 5th last year after promotion to the Championship in the GMCL so if you can join us and make a difference to push us that further forward, please get in touch! We have slashed playing membership for senior players to £90 and students to £70. Junior membership is currently £30 and includes training. We are reviewing the junior rate and details will be available soon because we want to offer winter sessions and increase the number of coaches to aid development for our young people. Anyone of any ability is welcome along. We have 3 senior league teams, a Sunday friendly team and bustling junior section.
If you like to join in socially, we have associate membership available from only £15.00. We are launching our full social calendar shortly so stay tuned but upcoming events are listed below. Follow this link to start joining up so we have your details

Winter Nets
We will start our winter practice program a little later than usual however we have been lucky enough to be able to secure slots at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Indoor Centre. I understand only four clubs in the whole county were able to use the Centre, whose facilities are one of the best in the UK.

Juniors – every Friday at pm from 27th February to 31st March. £5.00 per session including coaching

Our bar has been newly refitted and our main room will undergo refurbishment following bonfire night, it’s an ideal space for a birthday, anniversary or social gathering. We can accomodate any requests if you need music or food and we are more than happy to let you cater for yourself. Head over to our contact page or email sccadmin@stretfordcricketclub.co.uk. Sponsorship
Sponsors are key to the club’s survival and help us to reinvest in our own facilities. Recently we have re-laid our playing square, gained two new sightscreens, improved outdoor seating and refurbished the bar. Next on our agenda is to install Solar Panels to reduce our expenditure on electricity and reduce our carbon footprint.
If you would like to support the club with sponsorship, we have packages available from £30.00 and with a social media following of over 2000 and 5000 different people through our gates every year we hope to help you with your promotion too!
