Help Needed – Land Contamination, Ecology, Biodiversity Assessments for our Club House Rebuild Project

I’m leading on a project to rebuild the club house at Stretford and we are at the stage of applying for planning permission. However, pre-planning advice from the council says we need to conduct a land contamination assessment, ecology assessment & bio-diversity assessment to submit with our application. If anyone knows any consultantants or companies that might be able to help with some social value related activity or volunteering/pro-bono please contact me. The club is located on an old landfill site and is part of the green belt therefore the cost just to get to planning is considerable. And I mean considerable. Especially for an open access community cricket club that is already paying £6000 per year for electric (and thats with solar panels covering a third of our use)

Mavis Hutton RIP

With sadness, I report the death of Mavis Hutton who died peacefully on Saturday surrounded by her family. Mavis was aged 90 and was a long time supporter of the club.

Mavis’s first husband was Norman Pomfret, with whom she had two children, Mark and Jan. Following the death of Norman, she remarried the late Pete Hutton; a life-member and first team batter. Mavis and Pete were both very influential figures in the history of SCC. They ran an electrical business and undertook a massive amount of electrical work when the club was rebuilt in 1985.

The club would not be where it is today if it was not for members like Pete and Mavis and we should always remember their contribution.

Condolences to all Mavis’s friends and family. We will announce funeral details when known.

Autumn Newsletter

First of all, thanks for navigating to this newsletter! You’ve either followed a QR code off a leaflet at bonfire night (we hope you are having a good time!) or have simply surfed here along the waves of the information superhighway (yikes, not heard the internet called that since the early 00s)

As all the leaves turn brown and the sky turns grey, it appears to be a long walk to next cricket season however, the club is working hard to make progress.

South African Luke Smith Joins as Overseas Player for 2023
We are delighted to welcome Luke Smith as our overseas player for the 2023 season. The 24 year old, from Kimberley, South Africa, is a left handed top order batsmen and top quality wicket keeper. Luke has enjoyed sucessful seasons at Prestwick CC and Helensburgh CC in Scotland and, last season, at Ainsdale in the Liverpool Comp.

Luke has been schooled in the Northern Cape High Performance Academy and has spent time as a player coach in New Zealand for Takapuna CC in Auckland and is spending the winter playing in Melbourne Australia.

The well travelled yougster is hungry for runs and is keen to immerse himself in the club and offer support to our own youngsters within the junior section.

Double Delight on Opening Day

Stretford 1XI v Whalley Range 1XI

After a long celebratory winter and numerous replays of that Cameron Ball run out. The Division One Champions finally began their new campaign hosting Whalley Range.

Stretford won the toss and elected to bat on a flat wicket. New overseas signing Josh Julius opened the innings with SCC staple Tom Coulson. Both got the season off to a solid start by producing an opening stand of 47. A couple of quick wickets fell, but once AJ and Munir got to the crease the ship was steadied. A commanding partnership was built by adding 105 for the 4th wicket, AJ hitting a superb 84 and Munir 35 to guide the home side to a total of 223.

The second innings got off to an ideal start for the 1st XI. Normal service resumed for skipper Williams as he picked up 2 early wickets and finished with 4-57.

After that Range put on a 120 run partnership for the 3rd wicket; with their overseas hitting 73 and some rusty fielding helping them along the way.

With the assistance of Off spinner Jeff Marshall, Stretford held their nerve. Tighter lines were bowled and a few more wickets fell and the 1st XI closed off victory by a solitary run. Or as former New Zealand keeper Ian Smith would put it, “by the barest of margins.”

Up next for the 1st XI is a trip away to newly relegated Royton.

Stretford 2nd XI at Golborne 2nd XI

Saturday saw a refreshed second team travel westwards to take on last season’s promotion hopefuls Golborne.

After losing the toss the Stretford men took to the field. Things couldn’t have got off to a better start when what can only be described as a loosener from captain Renforth was edged and snaffled by keeper Lomax.

With young gun Taylor looking dangerous from the other end, Golborne found it difficult to score. Page and Grant both took to the stage bowling fast and destructive spells throughout the middle order. Page took his first senior 5 wicket haul backed up by Grant’s 2 victims and with the additional help of Ben Riddell’s wicket, Golborne left the field amassing 137-9 from their 45.

Stretford got to work chasing a competitive total on a wicket which was giving something for everybody. Fortunately Pav Aqueel was up to the challenge scoring a boundary filled 35 to help Stretford get underway. However, when he was dismissed along with the rest of the top 5 Stretford were left 71-5 at drinks. A set Riddell and new to the crease Renforth slowly began to build a partnership, patiently waiting to punish any loose deliveries.

Riddell fell victim when trying to cut away to the off side boundary. Renforth was met by his newly appointed vice captain Wild and showed no hesitation in attacking the remaining runs.

Golborne bowler Corfield being dispatched over square leg for six sent a message of intent to the home side. Both skipper 38* and vice 14* seeing the blue boys home for a 4 wicket victory.

Next week the boys take on Deane and Derby at home and look to build on their impressive start.

ML & GR

20/20 Vision: Guy Robinson – Director of Cricket

I’ve always tried to live by the principle of giving 100% in everything that I do. If you give 100 % and it is not good enough you cannot question yourself. Thats exactly what I try to do from day one when I joined Stretford in 2015.

I have been involved in cricket for many years and whilst Junior Chairman of a thriving junior section at Brooklands,I was approached to see if I would be interested in overseeing all cricket at Stretford in the role of Director of Cricket .I could see massive potential in taking the club forward and jumped at the chance to try to fulfil that potential .I had already had a good rapport with Stretford over the years whilst both playing and in a coaching junior teams against them .

Being such an active club member natural to me.We are getting a very good core of club members not who are willing to help in all aspects of the club now which is very encouraging.

I would hope that I was approachable to everyone and if they need any advice I am always available. There is not one style of management, certain players need an arm around their shoulder or others need to be encouraged in a slightly stronger way .

Bonfire night was a prime example of what the club does well.It is such a massive event for the club and the number of club members who volunteered in many capacities to make it such a success was  absolutely fantastic. We are always looking for more volunteers and new ideas coming into the club so if anyone is willing to help in any way we would love you to get involved.

There are many things that can be improved at the club but I feel better communication is needed. We are doing an awful lot of work on our new website  to make it easier for players to advise their availability and paying memberships etc at the moment.

My vision for the club on the field is to keep improving and to continue to give opportunities to younger players in the senior teams. All our senior teams have players who have come through or are still in the junior section and I am very keen for this to continue. We are always looking to increase our junior and senior members so any new members would be made more than welcome.

I would say the highlights would have to be the 1st team getting promotion in my first season and the Under 18/19 having great successes in reaching the the Lancashire Cup final and winning the South Manchester League .

I have had my own opticians practice for 30 years in Stretford Mall,’Specialeyes Optical Centre which keeps me very busy and all club members get discounted rates for all their optical needs!! I love all other sports and have been a ‘massive’ Manchester City fan all my life so watching the style of football we are playing now is fantastic.
